The inspiration for the exhibition's title, "For better experience, please wear headphones," stems from Gao Han's recollections of childhood gaming experiences, particularly the text and sounds that appeared when games started up. These hazy impressions became an integral part of his creative process, infusing his designs with unique inspiration and energy. The exhibited works span various categories, encompassing experimental art, commercial design, and personal creations. They touch on multiple fields, including literature, language, and fashion. Gao Han transcends the confines of the "two-dimensional" concept, much like the majority of the exhibition's focus is not static media presentation but a continuous dynamism.
As exemplified in the text he penned for the showcased work "Movement.":
A movement inside a movement. A movement between movements. A movement onto a movement. A movement for a movement. A movement. Movements.
We interpret this as Gao Han's creative ethos. He embraces experimentation and incorporates potential from diverse fields into his designs, all while viewing the needs of the audience and the era through a personal lens. The result is a collection of designs that transition into composed symbols with calm restraint. Through his work, Gao Han conveys that design is not merely functional but also possesses profound cultural, emotional, and societal influence. This driving force leads the way and is what we refer to as "innovation."
This exhibition is curated by the Tokyo-based design studio "Brainy atama." As China's economy evolves, graphic design rapidly transforms with diverse perspectives and unique styles. We aim to introduce the unique aesthetics and diversity of Chinese design to Japan and the broader Asian audience. This exhibition represents the first step towards realizing our long-term vision, and we sincerely hope it becomes a new starting point for cross-cultural design development and mutual understanding between China, Japan, and many other cultures. 優れたクリエーターは観客と時代のニーズを敏感に捉えられるものです。1995年生まれのHan Gaoは、北京にあるデザイン事務所ABlackCoverDesignの修行を経ち、その後イェール大学に進学してグラフィックデザインを学びました。彼はその学びの中で、商業的な完成度と実験的な要素を兼ね備えたデザインに常に挑戦してきました。彼のデザインには独自の手法と理論が形成され、ある種の作家性とも言え、識別度の高いビジュアル言語が生まれたのです。Han Gaoは、各時代のデザインに対する重要な視点を理解し、その特定の歴史的背景下における画面構成の重要性に心を砕いています。彼は特に、生活の中で見落とされがちな細部や要素を再構築しました。
本展の「イヤホンを使用するとより良い体験ができます」も同様です。ここでは彼の幼少時代のゲーム体験からインスパイアされる“ぼやけた印象”ごと作品になっており、それによりデザインに独特のインスピレーションとエネルギーが注入されることで、グラフィックデザインの境界線が探求されています。
今回開催される個展では、彼の受賞作品を含む、メディアや映像芸術作品も一堂に展示される予定です。ここには文学、言語、ファッションなど、さまざまな分野のデザイン実践が含まれ、多くの作品は静的なメディアの提示ではなく、持続的なダイナミズムに焦点が当てられています。特に、展覧会に展示された作品「Movement.」の一節がそれを物語っています。
