Yasuhiro Suzuki, with his 180-centimetre tall, round head and his perpetually worn sailor shirt, can be easily recognized even in the bustling school campus during break time. When I first met Suzuki at the laboratory of the University of Tokyo, the already limited time was largely occupied by the topic of the Bodhi tree seed at the entrance. Our conversations were filled with leaps and bounds. This experience could be described more as a fascinating adventure within Suzuki's mind rather than mere linguistic communication.
"In every act of creation, there is a renewal of self-awareness," Suzuki said in an interview. His works mirror himself, precise and gentle. Suzuki's works are an extension of himself. Since his high school days, Suzuki has accumulated a vast collection of sketch notes, which can be described as overflowing. The densely filled sketch drawings not only serve as a wellspring of inspiration for Suzuki but also as fragments of his soul left in space and time. Over several decades, recurring themes in his notes include park play equipment, floating air, leaf textures, and falling apples. Behind these images lies Suzuki's grand imagination of the universe, gravity, time, air, and other elements of the real and imaginary worlds. Simultaneously, this imagination is constantly interconnecting, merging, and transforming. Suzuki's 'TRANSLATE is not a simple conversion from A to B but rather a change in his perception of the world, reflecting on how he connects with the world. It is an infinite chain reaction catalyzed by the catalyst of "Yasuhiro Suzuki." The artist Yasuhiro Suzuki does not have a single "finished" artwork.
In the final instalment of the "Translation" series, we present a philosophical dialogue between artist Yasuhiro Suzuki and "apples". In this exhibition, in addition to Suzuki's early representative works such as "Apple Kendama" and "Constellation of Apples", two new collaborative works between Suzuki and ATAMA will be unveiled for the first time: "Weight of the Apple" and "Magnetic Fields Apples."
鈴木康広は、標高180の丸い頭と変わらぬマリンシャツで、忙しいキャンパスでもすぐに見分けられます。東京大学の研究室で初めて鈴木に会ったとき、限られた時間の大半が玄関のボダイジュの種の話題で占められました。跳ねるような会話が私たちのすべての対話を貫きましたが、これは言葉を使ったコミュニケーションというより、鈴木の頭の中の不思議な冒険という体験でした。
「すべての創作は、自己認識の更新です」と鈴木はあるインタビューで述べました。彼の作品は彼自身そのものです。清潔で温かみがあります。鈴木の作品は、実際には彼自身です。高校時代から始めたスケッチノートは、今では膨大な量になっています。ぎっしりと詰まったスケッチは鈴木のインスピレーションの源であり、彼が時空間に残した魂の断片でもあります。数十年にわたり、ノートには繰り返し公園の遊具、浮かぶ空気、葉の模様、落ちるリンゴが登場します。これらのイメージの背後には、宇宙、重力、時間、空気などの虚実の世界要素への壮大な想像があります。同時に、この想像は絶えず連結し、融合し、変化しています。鈴木の「変換」は、単にaからbへの変化ではなく、世界への感覚の変化、自分自身と世界とのつながり方への考察、鈴木康広を触媒とした無限の連鎖反応です。アーティストの鈴木康広には、「完成」した作品は一つもありません。
変換シリーズの最後に、私たちは鈴木康広と「リンゴ」との哲学的対話をお届けします。今回の展覧会では、鈴木の初期の代表作である「リンゴ剣玉」や「リンゴの宇宙観察」に加え、脳と鈴木のコラボレーションによる新作「リンゴの砝码」と「磁力線リンゴ」が初めて公開されます。
